Beat the Heat in NYC Without Breaking the Bank: Try These 6 Low-Cost Tips

When temperatures rise in New York City, your home can quickly become uncomfortable. The good news? A few simple changes may help you stay cooler and keep your energy bills in check.

Here are 6 low-cost ways to keep cool this summer:

  1. Avoid using the oven on very hot days.

Try meals like salads or sandwiches when you can. This helps keep extra heat out of your home.

  1. Run big appliances later in the day.

Try using the washer, dryer, or dishwasher at night, when it may be cooler.

  1. Wear light, breathable clothes.

Cotton and other light fabrics can help you stay more comfortable.

  1. Cool your body down.

Try a cool bath, cool shower, or a cool cloth on your wrists, head, and neck. But watch out for symptoms of heat stroke and get medical help if you still feel hot.

  1. Check on people who may need help.

Older adults, people with health problems, and young children can be at greater risk during very hot weather. Check on loved ones and neighbors.

  1. Keep pets cool too.

Make sure pets have fresh water and shade. Try to keep them off hot sidewalks.
