A heat pump is an electric system that moves heat instead of creating it. In the winter, it moves heat into your home. In the summer, it moves heat out. That means one system can heat and cool your home.
Heat pumps can also be quiet and energy efficient. They may help you and your loved ones feel more comfortable at home, too.
One thing to know is that heat pumps need to be set to the right mode for the season.
In the winter, use heating mode. This tells the system to warm your home when it gets too cold.
In the summer, use cooling mode. This tells the system to cool your home when it gets too hot.
If the system is set to the wrong mode, your home may not feel comfortable. For example, if cooling mode is still on during cold weather, the system will act like an air conditioner.
Heat pumps also work best when the temperature stays fairly steady. Try not to turn the system on and off again and again. Small changes are usually better than big swings.
Many homes feel comfortable around 68–72°F in winter and 74–78°F in summer. If you are not sure how to change the settings or which heat pump you have, check your thermostat instructions or ask your landlord, property manager, or installer for help.
